The Great Silk Road in Darynok Mall: The Launch of a New Designer Silpo Store 21.12.2019

Caravans, camels, merchants and mosques - a new themed Silpo styled after the Great Silk Road opened in Darynok mall. At the entrance and above the cash registers, you can see a loaded caravan of 6 camels and a small donkey, which carries a load of things. The animals are led by a cameleer to the Eastern Market.

According to the concept, guests at the supermarket travel the most exotic stretch of the Great Silk Road - fr om Dunhua (China) to Samarkand (Uzbekistan). They are invited to walk through the desert, admiring its endless sandy expanses and oases. The shopping area of 1,650.6 square meters is styled in desert colors and hosts a range of large colorful fabric tents with grocery sections: a deli and a Traditional Shop with small farms produce, fish and seafood, and freshly-made confectionery.

The first stop, Dunhua, is a city on the outskirts of the Great Wall of China that is the gateway to China for countless caravans. Here, merchants stock up on silk and porcelain to head east. The red tent spreads over the section with vegetables and various fruit, even exotic ones. Wh ereas under the traditional Chinese roof, there is a café with a freshly-cooked pizza, sandwiches and ready meals. The café can sit 43 guests, while 6 more can be seated at the bar.

In Kashgar, at the second stop, Silpo's guests can see a variety of woven textiles and tapestries that were appreciated by the Chinese. Pay attention to the carpets on the walls and columns. This section hosts the bakery department with products made by Silpo bakers and Craftsmen, and along the walls there is a section with fresh fish and meat and a deli.

Finally, the radiant Samarkand is the pearl of the Great Silk Road. In this section, guests will enjoy cityscapes neighboring with shelves with drinks, alcohol, pastry and frozen products.

“We chose the theme of the Great Silk Road to show guests the magical oriental market they had read about in children’s tales. On the walls, we depicted scenes from a market life that underline this story and create a special atmosphere. There are not only ordinary things like silk, jewels, food and various items, but also mythical animals and magic items are sold in the market”, explains Silpo Marketing Director Kateryna Ohuriaieva.

In the supermarket, you can also buy fresh juice, beer, and live fish that will be immediately prepared for you, and smoked fish cooked in Silpo’s smokehouse, a variety of bread from Silpo’s bakery. For the convenience of guests, we have placed 17 cash registers, 5 of which are self-service registers.

The Silpo supermarket chain has been experimenting with interior design since the beginning. Over five years ago, the retailer began designing its own thematic conceptual designs for individual supermarkets, and in 2018 expanded the experiment to the entire network. Now every new Silpo has its own design and additionally there is a program of updating the design and concept of existing stores (as of 01/01/2020, there are seven supermarkets with their own thematic design). Currently, Silpo is one of the few major grocery retailers in the world to create custom themed designs for each store.

The network has supermarkets styled after the Mavka Universe, Van Gogh, music theme, ancient printing house, yacht club/seaport, Asian culture, and the Wild West. There is even a Klingon language store (fictional language of the Star Trek universe) and a rock stars store. In 2019, three designer supermarkets were listed in the Europe's Finest Store 2019, the top 25 of the best innovative designs of European stores according to the European Supermarket Magazine.

Silpo is one of the largest Ukrainian chains of grocery stores in Ukraine with an assortment of around 76,000 grocery and related products, as well as products of its own brands and imports. The company’s project “Lavka Tradytsii™” (Eng. Traditional Shop) aims to support and develop small Ukrainian manufacturers, whose products can be purchased at Silpo and Le Silpo delicacies.

As of 21/12/2019, the retail chain has 256 supermarkets, including 4 Le Silpo delicacies.
